I’m Arielle, and I got into comics based on my interest in cartoons. I’ve done some writing about comics on a blog called Nerdcenaries. I focus mostly on female representation.
I always liked comics, but they really started becoming important to me when I was diagnosed with Multple Sclerosis. I’ve always been scared of needles, but I had to start self-injecting to treat my MS when I was 19. It was a hard transition to make, but Batman helped me do it. I always feel a bit goofy saying that, like I’m too old to be that sick kid visited by a face character from Disneyland— but feeling like your body is completely out of your control is frightening in ways that kinda make you feel like a kid again. Comics are about heroes, and they teach us to be strong in the face of adversity. There’s a kind of almost-cheesy optimism unique to super hero comics that I think is indispensable, and the community should always have its arms open for people that need that kind of support.
